How to choose the best Energy Efficient Windows.
The BFRC has made it easier for consumers to see how efficient a window is. From October 1st 2010 all windows installed in the UK have to acheive a U Value of 1.6W/m2.K or better. There are two ways the installer can prove this.
- Provide a BFRC Energy Rating (A, B or C). Any company providing an "Energy Rated" window will provide you with a Energy Rating certificate (Usally in the form of a certificate or sticker on the window) proving the performance of the frame.
- Provide a U Value certificate, backed by a BFRC Certified Simulator.
Both of these two ways provide you, the customer, with a sure fire way to see just how efficient the window frame is.
It's all in the label
Firstly, using the Energy Rating certificate, don't just concentrate on the A, B or C. Look for the Energy Index, this tells you how much energy the window the window gains/looses. E.g. An energy index of -3 will lose 3 kilowatt hours per square metre per year. This means that not all A rated windows will be the same. An A with an energy Index of 0, will be worse than an A with an Index of 6.
Secondly, look for the U Value itself. The window needs to acheive 1.6W/m2.K or better (the lower the value the better)
